Doctor Benjamin Robertson, 89, of Bassett, died March 17, 2001, in Clearwater, Fla., after a period of declining health.
A native of Patrick County, he was born Feb. 22, 1912, to the late William A. Robertson and the late Susan Foley Robertson. His first wife, Lucille Clift Robertson, also preceded him in death, as did four brothers and two sisters.
He moved to Bassett in 1926, and in 1934 he started the D.B. Robertson Insurance Agency in Bassett where he worked until he retired in 1986.
He was active for many years in Bassett, Henry County and Martinsville civic, charitable and fraternal organizations which include: the Martinsville Elks Club; the Bassett Dick Bell Lodge #155 Knights of Pythias, where he was a past Chancellor and a 65 year member; the Bassett American Legion Post 11; the Bassett Rotary Club; the Tuberculosis Association; the American Red Cross; and the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Virginia of which he was a past president.
Since 1928, he held membership in the Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church and the Men's Sunday School class. For over 50 years he served on the board and was instrumental in establishing the church-sponsored Boy Scout Troop #68. He also participated in Methodist Men and served on several committees.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Bullock Robertson; a daughter, LaVonne Robertson Smith; a stepson, Jason Bullock of Arlington; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian R. Powell of Chesapeake; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim Meredith and Jim Gravely officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services, Bassett from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at 18 Dove Lane, Stanleytown.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, Bassett Rescue Squad or Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church.
