He faithfully heeded his nation's call during WWII and enlisted in the US Army in 1943. He served in the Ninth Army and George S Patton's Third Army in the European Theater, a fact of which he was very proud of. He received decorations for his participation in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central European Campaigns. He attained the rank of Sergeant before his discharge in April 1946.
Dick joined the Air Force in January 1947, a union which produced 2 daughters and 5 grandsons. Dick worked for Wilson & Co as a butcher for 30 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1857, for many years a member of St. James Episcopal Church and its vestry. Always a loving and generous grandpa, Dick's pride and joy were his family, especially the recent addition of his great grandchildren.
Dick's life exemplified the hard work, perseverance, honesty, and patriotism of his generation. He loved American and loved living, and was truly a good and decent man.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Ann; his sister, Margie; brother, Norman; and his parents.
Dick is survived by 2 daughters, Alpha Ann & husband Billy Fields, and Margie Kay Lawrence; 5 grandsons; 4 great grandchildren; brothers, Ronnie, Earl, Stanley, David, and Kenny.
