Lula Tharaldson-Martinson, was born on her parents, Daniel and Ingnora Tharaldsons homestead, in Laketown Township, Barnes Co. in Dakota territory before it became a state, on 23 May 1887. Daniel and Ingnora were Norwegian Immigrants who came to the USA and homesteaded in Dakota Territory. Lulas mother died in 1902 and her father in 1903. She was 16 and her younger sister Ida was 12 when they were orphaned. They then were reared by their older brother Emil Denver Tharaldson, age 17.
Lula attended Valley City Normal School, as did Ida, after they finished school in Laketown Twp. Lula married Mike Martinson, a Norwegian Immigrant, who had come to the USA when he was 17, on 23 Feb 1909 at Third Ave. Lutheran Church in Valley City, ND. They left on their honeymoon to Norway to visit Mikes family, and sailed on the steamship Mauretania.
When they returned to North Dakota, Mike and Lula farmed the part of Daniels homestead land, NW of Dazey, ND in Laketown Twp., that belonged to Lula and they stayed there until 1946 when they retired to Portland, Oregon.
Lula and Mike had 3 daughters, Annetta Irene Martinson-Senff-Martin, of Gresham, OR, Eleanor LaVerne Martinson-Opdahl, who died in Long beach Calif. 19 Feb 2005, and Verna Selma Martinson-Mahrer, who died in Park River, ND on 11 Dec 2004.
Lula passed away 23 Sep 1973 in Park River, ND, and was taken back to Gresham, OR to be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Mike who had died in 1958. They were just 11 mos. shy of their 50th wedding anniversary when Mike died.
Lula went to Park River from Portland, OR to live with her youngest daughter, Verna Mahrer, when she was no longer able to live on her own after Mike died.
Lula was a great cook, she made amazing Norwegian Potet Lefse, and taught her granddaughter, Donna L. Senff-Mata how to make it.
