His paternal great-grandfather, Nathan Barber, was a descendant of George Soule, a Mayflower passenger and signer of the Mayflower Compact. Both his grandfather Thomas Dunbar and paternal great-grandfather Nathan Barber served in the Revolutionary War.

Horace was born in Connecticut 7 February 1849 probably at Suffield, Hartford Co. where his family resided in 1850; died at LaCrosse, LaCrosse Co., Wisconsin September 1886 of consumption aged about 40 years [Lineage of Rev. Richard Mather, p. 637; Caledonia Journal, 6 Oct. 1886; Daughter, Maud's, Birth Certificate, LaCrosse Co.].

As a young boy Horace removed with his family to Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota, in 1853. Horace was raised at Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota where he was enumerated with his parents between 1857 and 1875 [1860 U.S. Census, p. 9; 1865 Minnesota State Census, entry 14; 1870 U.S. Census; 1875 Minnesota State Census, all on microfilm]. He was a schoolteacher in 1870.

Horace married at Houston Co., Minnesota, 14 June 1871 Phoebe R. NEWBERRY, aged 19 [Houston Co. VR, Marr., Bk. A, p. 351]. Their wedding was witnessed by Wells E. and Alice C. DUNBAR. Phoebe may have died before May 1875 as she was not enumerated by the 1875 state census [1875 Minnesota State Census, Houston Co., Caledonia, microfilm].

Horace removed with his family to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, by 1878, where he was a clerk for J.H. Preston's livery, boarding at Preston Hotel [LaCrosse Dir., 1878]. By 1880 he was a horse trainer, residing in 1885 at Smith's driving park [1880 U.S. Census; LaCrosse Dir., 1885].

La Crosse papers slate that Horace Dunbar is training D. P. Smith's trotter, "Maggie Kevin,'' and she has been entered to trot at the (Minnesota) State Fair at Owatonna, Wednesday, Sept. 5th [Peoples Press, 31 August 1883].

Horace married second, say by 1878, Jennie JOHNSON [Her Obituary, LaCrosse Tribune, Mar. 1, 1909, p. 6; 1880 U.S. Census, Wisconsin, LaCrosse Co., LaCrosse, 1st Ward, entry 565/593, microfilm].

Horace was survived by his wife Jennie and several young children to mourn his untimely loss [Caledonia Journal, 6 Oct. 1886].
