Martha Evelyn Cain was a daughter of Newell C. and Texie (Church) Cain. She graduated from Allen Jay High School and completed nurse's training through the Cadet Nurse Corporation during World War II. She later earned a bachelor's degree from Guilford College. She married Patrick Bencini 6 June 1962.
