Jacobus, Maatje and seven of their 15 children immigrated to America from the Netherlands. They arrived at Ellis Island on the ship Werkendam (from Rotterdam) April 22, 1892.

1894 the family is living at 409 Godfrey Ave. in Grand Rapids, Mi.

1900 Census shows a grandaughter Maud DeWinter living with the family.

The 1902 Grand Rapids Directory lists Jacob as a cabinet maker at Furniture City Cabinet Co. and Jacobus as an oil peddler, James is listed as a packer, John is also working at Furniture City. Andrew (Adriaan) is a carver, and boards at 281 Quarry.

1902 Legrands are living at 415 Caulfield Ave. in Grand Rapids.(now 887 Caulfield , 1912 numbering change)

After Jacobus death in 1909, Maatje Lagrand (age 73) and son John Lagrand age 27, are living with her daughter and son-in-law Gertrude and Peter Blackport at 887 Caulfield Avenue ,Grand Rapids with their family.

Jacobus La Grand aged 73 years, died last night at the home of his daughter at 415 Caulfield avenue. He is survived by his widow and seven children, all residents of this city. Funeral notice will be given later. The omisssion of flowers is requested.
