Mike Martinson was born Menelai Martinussen Hopstad, Bjornor, Sor Trondelag, Norway, on 5 Jan 1882 to parents, Martinus & Elen Hopstad. He immigrated to the USA when he was 17, and changed his name to Mike Martinson because others had such a hard time pronouncing his given name. He went first to Baldwin, Wisconsin where he worked in the woods. Then he moved to Dazey, Barnes Co., North Dakota where he remained until he retired in 1946. Mike married Lula Tharaldson 23 Feb 1909 in Valley City, ND, at the Third Ave. Lutheran Church. They left on their honeymoon to Norway on the steamship, Mauretania, to visit Mikes family. Mike died 19 Dec 1958 in Portland, OR, just 11 months before their 50th wedding anniverary.
Mike and Lula farmed Lulas portion of the Homestead in Barnes County, Laketown Twp. which she received upon the death of her parents Daniel and Ingnora Tharaldson.

Mike and Lula were active in church and community work. Mike was township supervisor and school board member. He also belonged to the Woodmen and Odd Fellows Lodges. Both were lifelong members of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Dazey, ND, and later, after retirement belonged to the Lutheran Church in Gresham, OR, though they lived in S.E. Portland.
