Zelma Mae Newman
(1918 - 2013)


Zelma Mae Newman died August 29, 2013 at the age of 95. Zelma was born August 4, 1918 in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Her parents were Roy W. Custar and Leona Mae Custar. She lived in Laverne, Oklahoma until 1940, when she married Ralph E. Newman Sr. on January 21, 1940. Ralph died in 1990.

Ralph and his brother's, Delmar & Dwight owned Newman's Fish Market, which was started by their father, John Newman.

Zelma was active in the P.T.A. when her daughter, Edwena was in grade school and she was a Girl Scout Leader. She was active at First Methodist Church and as a Lioness in the Downtown Eugene Club as well as the Yachats Lions Club. Zelma was a member of Lane County Historical Society. She and her brother-in-law, Ethan Newman researched and wrote about early Oregon history. Zelma loved doing family genealogy.

Zelma loved Bridge and played as often as possible. She was a Life Master for many years until her sight no longer allowed her to play. She was an avid fan of Oregon Duck Football and attended all home games from 1941 until several years ago when her sight prevented her from going. She watched Oregon Football games on TV or listened on the radio, sometimes doing both at the same time.

Zelma and Ralph lived in their Oregon beach home until Ralph's health required them to return to their home in Eugene. She lived five years at Cascade Manor and had many friendships there.

Zelma is survived by her daughter Edwena Matychuck and her husband Mike; three grandsons, David O'Kelley, Michael O'Kelley and Jeffrey Carr Sr.; five great grandchildren, Ashley, Cynthia, Andrew, Jacob, Jeff; one Great-great grandson, Joshua. A special thanks to John Schlesinger, a longtime family friend who did so much for her; and another new special friend, Lynn Joseph for her friendship to Zelma for several years.

A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 3rd at 1:00 PM at Musgrove Family Center, Rev. Brian Heron Pastor of Yachats Community Presbyterian Church will be officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lions Visiongift or charity of your choice.
