Biography
Alta was born on 10 January 1889 in Iowa Falls, Hardin County, Iowa. She was the only daughter, and probably the youngest child, of Joe and Mary Lake. Her family lived in Hancock County, Iowa in 1895.[1] Family history says that the family was living in North Dakota in 1900, where her oldest brother, Harry, died at age 16. The US Census of that year says they were living in Titonka town, Kossuth county, Iowa.[2] Her father was actually in the 1900 US Census twice, in North Dakota and in Iowa, about two weeks apart. He had possibly been in North Dakota, getting a house ready for the family and then returned to Iowa to retrieve his family, so they moved shortly after the census was recorded. A few years later, the family moved by rail car to Hebron, Nebraska. Alta and Frank had a wealthy aunt, who her birth family called "Auntie or Annie," but the Borden's called her "Retta." Aunt Retta had a house built on her Dad's farm and they were living in it there in 1910.[3] Frank lived with Auntie Retta in Chicago and completed high school. Alta then went to live with her aunt, but traveled instead, which wasn't a bad education, just without a diploma. Her brother Frank had married in February of 1910, took his honeymoon in Iowa, and then went to the Nebraska Sandhills to claim a homestead near Mullen.

Among the many residences Retta had, somewhere along the way, Alta met a man named Harold Herrick and they were married in Retta's home in Houston, Texas on 20 Sep 1916.[4] Alta's parents received a wedding announcement. Harry was training at an Army Camp near there at that time. It is believed that Alta never returned to Nebraska to see her parents. Harry was the son of Marshall Herrick (1852–1901) and Julia M. Allen Herrick (1854–1925). They went to live in New York State. living in Manhattan in 1920[5] and were in Suffolk county, in 1925.[6] Her husband Harry served in both WWI & WWII.

Harry and Alta took a trip to Europe, returning on 10 Sep 1922; citing departure port Cherbourg, France, arrival port New York, ship name Zeeland.[7] This was probably one of many cruises that they took, as that was fashionable at the time.

They had three children, who were listed in the 1930 and 1940 US Census, when they were living in Scarsdale Town, Westchester, New York.[8][9] Their oldest son, Marshall, was a bombardier in the Army Air Corps and was shot down over the North Sea on 28 July 1943. His first cousin and Frank's son, Wallace, was a pilot and was shot down in China about a year later.

Harry died in 1977 and was given full military honors at his burial in Arlington National Cemetery , Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia. Alta lived to age one hundred. She died on 10 May 1990[10] and is buried beside Harry and near Marshall.[11]
