Frank was born in Iowa, as were the rest of his siblings, to parents Joseph Henry and Mary Helen McConnelogue Lake. His mother's obituary lists five children; Florentine and John, who died in infancy, Harry, who died at age 16, Frank and Alta. The 1900 US Census lists Mary as a mother of five, three living, and Harry, Frank and Alta are the children in that census.
The family moved frequently. They were living in Hardin county in the 1885 state census, six moths before Frank was born. They were in Hancock county in 1895 and Kossuth county in 1900. They may have lived in other counties in Iowa. Mary's obituary of 1947 says that she lived near Hebron, NE, for 43 years and moved from Jamestown, ND, which would have been about 1904.
Frank's Aunt Annie Borden had Frank and Alta each lived with her while they finished high school. Frank went to high school in Chicago, probably from 1899-1903. Annie gave Alta the choice of education or travel and Alta chose travel. His Aunt also built the family a huge house on their farm near Hebron in about 1906.
About this time, Frank accepted the beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, nurturing his family in the Bible, to which he remained faithful for the rest of his life.
Frank courted a neighbor girl of the Corliss Family of Thayer county, NE. Frank and Nell Pauline Corliss were married in Nebraska about 1910 and took their honeymoon to Iowa. Shortly after that they went to the Nebraska Sand Hills and filed on a homestead near Mullen in Hooker county. There they had three boys, Mirza Joseph 1911, Harold Eugene 1913 and Wallace Wayne 1921. Joe became a teacher, married a teacher and lived in many places from Louisiana to Washington. Gene remained in Hooker county, married the daughter of another homesteader, raise a family on a two-section ranch on the Dismal River until he retired to the family farm near Hebron. Wallace had a passion for flying airplanes from a young age, became a licensed pilot about the time he graduated from high school and enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII and died in China.
About the time that Frank's father died in 1942 and his mother died in 1947, he and Nell moved from Mullen to Hebron, where they remained until Nell died in 1969.
