He died when he broke a leg when demolishing a shed on their farm in Bombay, Auckland, NZ. The sons took him to Auckland Hospital by horse and cart which must have been a very difficult journey. The boys returned to help their mother (Rachel) and then returned to Auckland Hospital to learn that Robert had died and been buried in a pauper's grave at Symond St cemetery. It was unmarked and there is no record as to precisely where. And now many graves have been moved to make way for the motorway.
However, the sons did find the grave (now lost again) and planted a tree on it.
