Thomas was the fourth child of Michael and Margaret (Brennan). The family immigrated to Chicago in 1883. Thomas never married. At the time of his death he worked as a groom at Lincoln Fields race track (now know as Balmoral). Prior to working in Crete he lived and worked at the Wilmette Golf Club. Thomas was survived by his brothers James and Martin as well as sister Annie.
