Emelia was the oldest child of John & Justina Boelter. On the day of the massacre (18-Aug-1862), Michael Boelter (John's younger brother) grabbed the Justina's baby, John Julius and ran. Justina could not keep up with Michael so she and her two daughters Emelia and Ottilie headed for the cover of the woods. She hid their for nine weeks. During that time Amelia died from starvation. Family lore has it that Emelia died because she would not nurse of her mother.

When the soldiers found Justina barely alive she told them where Emelie was last. Unfortunately, they never found her body. Most likely animals had carried her body off.

Her age is not certain, but she was listed as 3 years old in the 1860 census, thus the year of 1857 is what I put. Her date of death is also not quite known. Nine weeks after the massacre would be Oct 20th. So she died sometime before that date.

NOTE: There has been debate whether her name was spelled Amelia or Emelia. I believe that perhaps it was spelled with an "E". My reason is that Justina had two daughters by Michael. Elizabeth Louise & Lydia Emelia. I suspect that Lydia's name was after the child she lost.
