Stanford Peter Sorensen, 89, of Nampa, Idaho, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at a Nampa care facility.

He was born Feb. 7, 1924, to Douglas Peter and Lette (Hulet) Sorensen at home in Teto- nia, Idaho. He spent his childhood in the Teton Valley -- part of the time in Darby, Idaho, and the later years of his youth in Alta, Wyo. He attended Driggs Elementary and graduated from Teton High School in 1942.

Stanford graduated a month early due to WWII; he was inducted into the U.S. Army infantry at Camp Roberts, Calif., where they decided he had flat feet and thought he would be a better artillery man, and he was shipped off to Fort Sill, Okla. His service record included African and German campaigns before being honorably discharged in 1946.

He spent a year at Ricks College before serving a 2-year mission in Brazil. Stanford was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings during his lifetime.

After his mission, he graduated from BYU-Provo as a speech therapist. He taught school in Salt Lake City before wanderlust seized him, and he spent some time in Tucson, Ariz., and Baltimore. Missing his family, he moved to Belmont, Calif., where he worked as a speech therapist.

He pursued his master's degree at Berkeley and obtained a position on the staff of the College of Notre Dame-Belmont, where he worked until he retired at 75 years old. He enjoyed his Belmont home until his eyesight failed and he moved to Nampa, Idaho, to be near his sister, Noreen Hansen.

Stanford was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Weldon and LaVerne Sorensen (WWII), Garth Sorensen, and Kent and Beth Sorensen.

Stanford is survived by brothers, Blaine (Ollie Jean) Sorensen of Eagle, Idaho, and Bryce (Colleen) Sorensen of Rigby; sister, Noreen (Kenneth) Hansen of Nampa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Stanford's funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2212 Amity Ave. in Nampa. There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Monday prior to services at the church. Interment will follow in Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Services are under the care of Flahiff Funeral Chapel in Caldwell, Idaho.
