Miss Catherine T Shields, 96, died Tuesday Jan 23, at the home of her niece and nephew-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard E Kohl of 115 N. May St., Joliet. She had lived with the Kohls the past 11 years. Her death followed an attack of influenza. Miss Shields was known as Katie. Her quick Irish wit and laugh endeared her to all who knew her. Miss Shields laughingly referred to herself as "The Kat" with nine lives. She was born on the family farm in Wilton Township. She lived there for 75 years and was prominent in church and civic affairs. She lived in the Manhattan area for 10 years before coming to Joliet to live in 1956. Miss Shields was the daughter of the late John and Ann Reeves Shields, who came to the Will county area as pioneers from Ireland. She was the last survivor of a family of 11 children. Her four brothers and six sisters preceded her in death; Henry of Rising City, NE, Charles of Chicago, James and Hugh of Wilton; an infant sister Ellen, Mrs John (Ella) Rogers and Mrs Michael (Mary) McGowan of David City, NE; Elizabeth and Alice of Wilton and Mrs. Alfred (Sarah) Glade of Manhattan. The last survivor with the name of Shields in the Wilton rea is a nephew, John J., who has been town clerk the past 30 years. Many other nieces and nephews survive. Two are in religious orders, Sister M Clothair of Wilmett and Brother Alfred Shields of DeLaSalle College in Manila in the Phillipines. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. today from the Haley Funeral Home to St. Patricks Catholic Church in Joliet at 10 a.m. The solemn requiem funeral mass will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Lloyd M Bowden of St. Rose of Lima Church in Kankakee. The Rev George Kuzma of St. Rose Church and the Rev Donald Pock of Lewis College in Lockport will be deacon and sub-deacon. The homily will be delivered by Msgr. Peter Seidl, pastor of St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington.
