Nell Collie Vaupel grew up in Ruston, Louisiana and moved to Salinas, California in 1945 when her mother moved to California. Nell graduated from Salinas high school in 1946, then attended Hartnell Community College where she took business courses. She married Herbert Vaupel on August 25, 1951. They have lived in Northern California for most of their married life. Nell was a homemaker and worked as a PBX Receptionist. She taught young children in Sunday school and has been a member of The Home Church of Lodi since 2009. Her hobbies were needle point, sewing and playing the piano. In 1970 Nell and Herb were living in Sonora, California where they founded the Grace Baptist Church of Sonora. They have also lived in Salinas, Oakland, Sacramento and in Stockton since 1979.

She was preceded in death by her father Daniel D. Collie of Ruston, Louisiana and her mother Bernice Hogan Collie Piffero of Salinas. Nell is survived by her husband Herb Vaupel of Stockton; sister Ann Hascall of Central Point, Oregon and brother Sam Piffero of Carmel, California. She had no children.
