The book “Gards- og slektshistorie for Heidal” (Bruket forlag, 2011 and 2012) says about Knut’s parents (vol. I, p. 54, translated): Hans Knutson Fjordungrein “(1820-1860), m. Guri Gudbrandsdotter (1821-1860, from Steinfinnsbø, 187/1). Children: Knut (b. 1848), to America in 1868; Johannes (b. 1850), to America in 1869; Gudbrand (b. 1854), to America in 1871; Ragnhild (b. ?); Mathias (b. 1858). They bought Mellemplassen in Dovre from Syver Tallerås and moved there in 1851. Knut and John were born in Heidal, the others in Dovre. After both Hans and Guri died in 1860, the youngest came back to Fjordungrein and grew up there. All five traveled to the USA at young ages and have many descendants there.”
Knudt, the oldest of five children, was orphaned at age 12. On the 1865 Norwegian census, Knudt and his youngest brother, Mathias, lived at Knudt’s birth place of Nordre Fjerdingrein in Heidal, with their paternal grandparents, Knut Hansson and Marit Pedersdotter. Knudt is 18 and a day laborer.
Knudt came to the US in about 1868. He married Kari Olsdatter 15 Aug 1869, at Chaseburg in Vernon County, Wisconsin. They settled in Barron County, Wisconsin, in about 1871. Knudt’s brother John Hanson also emigrated and was married to a sister of Knudt’s wife. (The American information is from Knudt’s great-granddaughter Marla.)
