G. J. Baxter was listed as age 19 on the 1860 Allen County, Ohio census with James Baxter, age 43, wife "M." and five younger siblings, all born in Ohio.

Griffith J. Baxter enlisted 8 March 1864 in Co. I, 34th Ohio Infantry. He transferred to Co. I, 36th Ohio Infantry and mustered out 27 July 1865 at Wheeling, West Virginia. He was listed as a Corporal.

He and his wife, Mary A., were in Allen County, Ohio in 1870, but were listed on the 1885 Kansas State census in Coffey County with nine sons and daughters, ages 1 - 17.

This family remained in Coffey County, Kansas and were listed on a number of federal and state census reports through 1920, when Griffith was listed as age 78. Mary A., wife of Griffith J. Baxter of Co, I, 34th and Co. I, 36th Ohio Infantry Regiments, received a Civil War widow's pension 11 July 1922. There had also been an invalid's pension granted earlier.

Griffith J. Baxter of Co. I, 34th Ohio Infantry, is named in the burial listings for Strawn Cemetery on a 1962 survey of veterans buried in Coffey County, Kansas.

His son, Harley B. Baxter, a veteran of World War I, is also listed in Strawn Cemetery. Mary A. Baxter received a Civil War widow's pension in July of 1922.
