Wife of Judge William D. Grace, she was the daughter of Drew and Elizabeth Smith Averett. She was also the mother of twelve children.

Lou and William were married Sept 12, 1844 in Talbot County and began residency there.

In 1850 they can be found in Districrt 24, just north of Howard, GA. William is working at the time as a farmer. The couple by now have their first two children, Sarah 3, and Ezekial, two years old.

Over the next ten years, Lou and William moved to the Prattsburg area of Talbot Co. and birthed another three children to join them. Charlie, Martha and William. Now William is a merchant, owing and operating a store. By this time a family of seven, they now also have living with them a clerk, James Willis, 22 who works in William's store, and Virginia Grace 19, believed to be possibly William's sister.

Sometime over the next ten years, the couple and growing family moved into the Howard area of neighborhing Taylor County. There they can be found in the 1870 census with four of their five children mentioned above, less Sarah, who by this time had moved on, and an aditional four. These newcomers are Samantha, Georgia, Walter and Clarence who was 5 months old at the time.

Sadly, it appears that the couple had birthed another three children over the years, who lived only a short while. These were John, Adeline and Jesse Allen.

Lou passed away four years after the 1870 census was taken, at the age of 48.

It is near Horeb Baptist Church, shown in error for years as Hobar Church on highway maps.]. Possibly some slaves are buried there as well. A marble slab covers the grave of Miss Lou Averett, born July 15, 1826, married to Judge W. D. Grace on September 12, 1844, and died July 28, 1874. Judge William D.
