Dick was born in Midland, the 5th child and first son of Thomas and Mary Pearl (McCracken) Cassiday. Four sisters, Reta, Etha, Margaretta and Esther preceded his birth and a brother, Robert, was born later. He attended school in Midland and on January 31, 1942 he married Marjorie Jean Clerc in Midland, Michigan. After the birth of their first son, Richard Gene Cassiday, he enlisted in the Army, training at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado before heading to Africa with the 237th Engineers Battalion. He was severely wounded as he landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy on D-Day, 1944 by shrapnel from bombs dropped from planes overhead. He spent 6 months in the hospital in England before returning to Percy Jones Army Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan where he remained for a year. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. After release from the hospital he returned to Midland where 5 more children were born, Michael, Rhonda, Kristine, Kelly and Kendra. He operated a Texaco Station on Ellsworth for many years and also was one of the original founders of Northern Recreation. After retirement he spent winters in Arizona and then in Zephryhills, Florida.
At the time of his death he was survived by his 6 children and one brother. Grandchildren: Stephanie Krueger, Jason Cassiday; Amber Hodge, TaeLyn Cassiday; Staci Manges, Kurt Manges, Elisha Manges; Sarah Bontinen, Galen Bontinen, Katie Bontinen. Great grandchildren: Will Cassiday, Alli Cassiday; Chelsea Hodge, Justin Hodge, Elijah Barnes, Isaiah Barnes, Leiland Barnes; Michael Manges, Gracie Stemick, Colton Stemick.
