Bertha Fike was born in Campo, CO December 8, 1918 to Dorwin D. Sparks and Gertrude (Taylor) Sparks. She was married to Robert Fike and divorced. She passed away July 28, 2013 in Cañon City, CO. She was 94 years old.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 4 sisters and a daughter, Emma (Dan) Hartzman. She is survived by her daughters, Dorwinia (Dory) Hopkins of Cañon City; Clara (Tex) Luthi of McCammon, ID; Katherine (Ron) Degler of Lone Tree, CO; brother Fred (Karen) Sparks of Albuquerque, NM; sisters, Lily Pienovi of Portland, OR and Phyllis (Tom) Zamarripa of Pueblo, CO. She has 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bertha graduated from Springfield, CO High School in 1936. She attended Beauty School in Denver, opening " Bertha's Coiffeur Shop" in Pritchett, CO while her husband was in the service. They became farmers south west of Springfield, CO. In the early 1950's they went to work at the Pueblo Army Depot, where Bertha retired in 1976. She moved to Cañon City in the early 1950's. Bertha loved poetry having collected several books and made scrapbooks full of poetry. She loved to crochet, knit and sew things for family and friends. She was always attending the Senior Classes at Pueblo Community College to learn something new from computer classes to woodworking classes; having made a plaque for Infirmary Donations and then completed her project of buying items for the Odd Fellows Home.

Bertha was initiated in Harmony Rebekah Lodge #96 in Cañon City on November 1, 1956, rising to President in 1963 in Cañon City and President for the State of Colorado in 1978. She traveled the state visiting all the Rebekah Lodges. Bertha's love for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs was serving on the I.O.O.F. Jurisdictional Youth committee, serving from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1983 to 1990. She served as Advisor and then Assistant Advisor of Echo Theta Rho Club #17 in Cañon City for more than 10 years. She served as a United Nations Educational Pilgrimage for Youth Tour Leader twice, Chaperone for Colorado's youth to the I.O.O.F. Sovereign Grand Lodge/International Association of Rebekah Assemblies Youth Day Sessions several times. She loved to travel to the Conventions for the Odd Fellows and Rebekah's, Theta Rho and Junior Odd Fellows. She usually had a car full when she traveled. After her term as State President, she went to work for the IOOF Grand Lodge office finally retiring when she was 80 years old. She was an active member of the lodge for 56 years.

She was a member of Canon Auxiliary L.A.P.M. No. 8 and also Phoenix No. 21 L.E.A. She was a charter member of the Colorado F.L.and T. Credit Union, serving until 1977 on the Credit Union Committee.

She was a member of the Cañon City Business and Professional Women's Club and was honored as "Woman of the Year 1975". She is Past President of Council VI, High Plains Region Toastmistress Club, a Past President of Aquilegia TMC and a Charter member of Royal Gorge TMC. She also belonged to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Her Memorial Service will be August 10th at the Odd Fellows Chapel at 1:00 pm. and will be conducted by Pastor Dan Limitone and Pastor Billy Ramsdell. There will be a reception following her service. The reception will be at the Royal Gorge Manor Penthouse from 2-5pm.
