JOHN BERKEMEIER OF BREDA DIED SATURDAY -
Died in St. Bernard’s Hospital at Council Bluffs, Bronchial Pneumonia Cause of Death.
Breda, Nov. 24.--John Berkemeier died Saturday, November 21, at St. Bernard’s hospital at Council Bluffs after an illness of three days with bronchial pneumonia. His death came as a great shock to all, as he had been in the best of health just prior to his death. Deceased was born at Greven, Westphalen, Germany, October 24, 1843. On May 10, 1868, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Overmann at Greven. They came to this county in 1882, locating at Breda until 1884, when they located on a farm new Danbury. Here Mrs. Berkemeier preceded him in death on November 3, 1897. In 1900 he again located here, and for a number of years was proprietor of the West Star saloon. On June 1, 1904, he was married to Mrs. Katherine Jasper, who still survives him. Deceased was an upright and honest man, and had not an enemy in the world. He was a devout member of the Catholic church. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Martin of Manilla, Ia., and Hubert of Kimball, S.D.; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Rohde of Anthon, Ia., and Mrs. Joe Riedmiller of Breda, 33 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. John Hays, preceded him in death at Danbury, Ia. Funeral services were held from St. Patrick’s church at Danbury Tuesday, November 24, and he was laid to rest beside his first wife in the Catholic cemetery there.
