Walter Huprich, 66, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 12:47 p.m., Sunday, July 28, 2013 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born April 11, 1947 in Desselbrunn, Austria, the son of Mathias and Maria (Kraus) Huprich. On March 18, 1967 he married Judy Carson, they later divorced. On June 18, 2005 he married Sheri Powell in Burlington, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife Sheri, one son Jared Huprich of the home, one step-daughter Angie Cantonwine (fiance John Charbonneau) of Fort Madison, Iowa, two step-sons Chris (Amber) Cantonwine of West Point and Ryan Cantonwine of West Point, two grandchildren Riley and Greysen, three step-grandchildren Dillon, Cody and Karlie, two brothers Mathias (Elizabeth) Huprich of Pennsylvania and Johann (Maria) Huprich of West Point, one sister Maria (Rudy) John of Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Walter came to the United States with his family from Austria in 1956 and he became a United States Citizen on October 20, 1980. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington, Iowa. He graduated from Fort Madison High School. He served in the United States Army with Big Red 1 during Vietnam. He worked for Standard of Beaverdale, Menke's Car Quest, Blackhawk Freight and later IROC Builders. Walter owned and operated Huprich Trucking, was a part time police officer in West Point for over twenty years and was head of the West Point Civil Defense Commission. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his son.

Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in West Point, Iowa where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1, 2013 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in West Point with Pastor Ryan Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in West Point with full military rites presented by the West Point American Legion Holtz-Geers Post #668.

A memorial has been established in his memory.
