Sam was born to the union of Peter Tobias Crawford and Gracy Myers. His first marriage was to Ollie Jordan and, to this marriage, two children were born, Troy and Zula Crawford. Ollie died February 8, 1915. His second marriage was to Ollie's sister, Effie Jordan, the mother of Ollie, Maudie, and Ovie Crawford.

Effie preceded Sam in death by three days. Both husband and wife died of pneumonia.

In addition to his children, he was survived by two brothers, S. J. and J. A. Crawford of Mangham; and two sisters, Mrs. Nobles of Mangham, and Mrs. Edward Goodwin of
Glass, MS.
