Philip Clay Adams was born on October 4, 1852, in Halifax County, Virginia. His father was John Henry Adams and his mother was Mary Kernal White, daughter of Turner D. White and Margaret S. Brandon, and granddaughter of Thomas White of Halifax, Va, and Mary Carnal, daughter of Patrick Carnal of Caswell, NC.

Philip migrated 1869 with his siblings and parents traveling to TX. His mother Mary, died on the trail. They settled Lamar, TX, but Philip and Benjamin left going back to Lake Co., TN, where Philip married Mary Julia Garrett.

Philip Clay Adams married Mary Julia Garrett in Aug 1883, Lake Co., TN, where her parents, Edward and Elizabeth Mary Brent Garrett were living. All moved north to Carlisle Co., Ky. Philip and his brother Benjamin B. Adams, a bachelor, farmed together. Philip died on January 14, 1939, in Bardwell, Kentucky, at the age of eighty-six. Benjamin B. was buried Elsey Cemetery, Carlisle, KY. Philip and Julia had nine children listed below.
