Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany was the second son of King James II of Scotland, and his Queen consort Mary of Gueldres, daughter of Arnold, Duke of Gelderland.
Albany's first wife was Lady Katherine, daughter of William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney, who bore him three sons and a daughter. This marriage was dissolved in 1478, and as its issue was regarded as illegitimate. Their children included:
Alexander Stewart (before 1477 – 9 December 1537), who became bishop of Moray. He left many illegitimate issue.
Andrew Stewart.
In 1480, Albany married Anne de la Tour d'Auvergne, daughter of Bertrand VI, Count of Auvergne and of Boulogne, as his second wife. She is not to be confused with her niece, Anne de La Tour d'Auvergne, who would marry her son, John. The title of Duke of Albany descended to their only son, John (1484–1536). Alexander and Anne also had a daughter, Maud Stewart, who died young.
The surviving daughter of Alexander, called Margaret Catherine Stewart, Albany also reportedly had an illegitimate daughter, Margaret Catherine Stewart, who was not born by either of his wives. She married Sir Patrick Hamilton of Kincavil (who died 30 April 1520).
Alexander was killed in a joust in Paris, allegedly by a splinter entering his eye.

According to Brydall, Robert. 1895. The monumental effigies of Scotland. Glasgow: Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, his effigy is in Elgin Cathedral
