William Jereboam Owens was a son of Owen William Owens and Mary Jones, natives of Wales. He was married 30 January 1884 in St. Clair County, IL to Margaret Ann Klock. They had eight children: Daisey, Bessie, Catherine, Owen Levi, Benjamin Fisher, John Watkins, Evona, and Theatus.

Like the other men in the Owens family, William worked his entire life in the coal mines of Illinois. He was a track layer and mine inspector.

William J. Owens lies in an unmarked grave in Gillespie Cemetery.
