Jefferson Brown PENNINGTON was the son of Isaac PENNINGTON and Agnes BROWN. We don't believe his parents were ever married as there were several legal arguments in Patrick Co., VA court records. His mother raised and educated him and he taught school. And he woed and wed a girl by the name of Edith REDFORD (Marriage Record: Marriages of Patrick Co., VA 1791-1850 by Lela C. Adams, page 94, Jefferson PENNINGTON married Eady REDFORD on 5 Feb 1829, Surety, Jesse REDFORD, Witness: Bird LOWE, Minister) and to this union eight children were born. They are: Nancy, Bill, Jess, Isaac, Jefferson, Columbus, John, Marion. Four being born in North Carolina.Jefferson B. Pennington moved with his mother; Agnes Brown (Martindale) Pennington, wife; Edith (Redford) and their three children to Indiana in 1833. After a year he moved to Moniteau Co., Missouri, where the other three children were born. And he lived there till he died in 1885 at the age of 83 years. In 1838, the family removed near Jamestown, Cole Co., Missouri, where Jefferson conducted a large farm until 1858. In 1858, he moved to Moniteau Co., Missouri and purchased another farm (same farm that son, Jesse, later lived on). He was a school teacher for 35 years and served as a Justice of the Peace of Linn Township for 25 years until the time of his death. He was also a member of the Babtist Church. After marriage to his second wife, Clara Ann Viles, they had ten children.

OBITUARY:

The below was provided by Mr. Peter D. Schlup, Route 1 Box 2760, Jamestown, Missouri 65046 on October 17th, 1995:

Died at his residence in Linn Township, near the Moniteau Saturday last, Jefferson B. Pennington aged 80 years

Uncle Jeff as he was familiarly known. Was a native of Patrick County, Virginia and has resided in the community where he died since 1838. He taught school a number of years and was Justice of the Peace for 25 years in connection with his farming. He was perfectly rational up to death, when to weak to talk he motioned his family around him to bid them a last farewell. All were present save the five sons who reside in Carroll County, Missouri. After his bidding all farewell he raised his hands and counted five on his fingers-giving-sons-they did not reach the house until after the death of their father. By request he was buried in a plain walnut coffin at the grave yard on the Lawson Farm. His twelve children, eleven sons and one daughter were all at his funeral. He was married twiced and was the father of nineteen children, seven of whom died young in years.

Uncle Jeff was a good citizen, kind and generous after battling through a long life of trails, dissapointments and temptations he closes his earthly career, leaving behind a clear record the reputation of an honest upright man has followed him the end. The partners of his joys and sorrows survives him, beside his twelve grown children.

Jefferson B. Pennington was a witness to the Last Will and Testament of John B. Longan dated 29 December, 1846 and it was recorded on 7 February, 1852 (Who is this John B. Longan? - mgp)

Jefferson Pennington was a witness to the Last Will and Testament of Samuel Maxwell dated 23 May 1846, and it was recorded on 17 June, 1847 (We believe Samuel Maxwell was the husband of Lucy Redford, who later married Thomas West - mgp)

BURIAL:

Records indicate that Jefferson was either buried in Wilson's Cemetary or on Lawson's Farm. (I'm not sure which one is correct but I believe they are the same location. I later found the correct records to be Wilson's Cemetery, Linn Township, Moniteau Co., MO in the Linn Twp., Moniteau Co., MO of Cemetery Records)

Jefferson B. Pennington was buried the same day as his death on the old Lawson farm in Moniteau Co., MO, near Jamestown. The farm is not called the Wilson farm. We have no records of the burial place of the mothers of Jeff or Edith (1st wife) but they could also be buried there.
