Steven McCullagh, 29, was killed instantly when a lightning bolt made a direct strike on a tarp the Scouts had set up in a meadow in the park about 4pm Thursday.
It was supposed to be a challenging 70-mile hike culminating in a spectacular midnight climb up Mt. Whitney to watch the sunrise. But eager anticipation turned to horror with a simple summer storm. Scoutmaster Steven McCullagh was remembered as a brainy athlete and dedicated "people lover" who returned to his hometown after getting a degree in agricultural economics at the University of California, Davis, and became active with the scouts."He developed a passion for mentoring children, and never stopped giving to his community," said his best friend since fourth grade and boss Sam Baxter. "He was good at everything he did because he put his whole heart into everything he did." McCullagh worked at the Terra Valentine Winery in St. Helena, where he started as a cellar master and moved up to controller.
