Early Life: Calvin was born August 17, 1925, in Garfield, Salt Lake County, Utah, to Ebbe Andrew and Evangeline Memmott Nielson. When he was still an infant, the family moved to Manti, Utah, where Cal grew up.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: In 1943, he was inducted into the United States Army, at age 18. His basic training was at Camp Fannon, Texas. Later, he joined the 26th Infantry Yankee Division and was sent into combat west of Metz, France, in Patton's Third Army. He was wounded in the left leg, and was thrown into the big breakthrough known as "The Bulge."
❦ He was taken from the front lines to a hospital in England on January 15, 1944. After recovering, he left the hospital and went back to France, then in the Army of Occupation. He was awarded an Individual Citation Certificate of Merit while working on the new bridges being built across the Rhine River. Cal returned to the USA and was discharged from Fort Douglas, Utah, on May 4, 1946, at the age of 20.
❦ Calvin married Laura Sena Bach; they were the parents of four children: Wayne A. and Dale F., of Manti, Utah; Mary Mackay (Blaine), of Murray, Utah; and Barbara, of Manti, Utah. Laura died in 1970. He married Myrtle "Cindy" Hancock Nielson in 1972, and has five stepchildren: Linda, Salt Lake City; Lora McAllister (Scott), of Richland, Washington; Sharon, who graduated from Utah State University in June; Bonny, attending Snow College; and Duaine A., of Manti. On April 6, 1957, he began working for Manti City as the marshall and has worked under five mayors: Gail Jensen, Ed Carlisle, Frank Garbe, Leslie Anderson and the present Mayor, Frank Wanlass.
❦ Cal loved hunting, fishing, camping, and was an avid rock hound. He loved flowers and was an amateur gardener.
❦ During Cal's 18-year tenure as a policeman, he has had the opportunity to help and counsel many young people of the area. He enjoyed working with people and was happiest when he was working on an important case. Calvin D. "Cal" Nielson, Manti Chief of Police, died Thursday, June 19, 1975, at the hospital in Mount Pleasant, Utah, of a heart attack. He was 49.
