Evangeline completed the eighth grade, which at that time was the highest grade level offered. She traveled to and from school in a horse drawn wagon. Her mother and faher passed away when she was only fourteen. She told stories of her parents. One is her mother's fondness for flowers and her fathers dislke for them. He always thought they were wasted at funerals and the irony is that he died in the cold spring and only had paper flowers on his casket while her mother's casked, in August was covered. After her parent's death, Evangeline took the responsibility of taking care of her two younger brothers. Many nights she would lay between them, hoding them to her and telling them bedtime stories. They called her their "Little Mother". One of her fondest memories was the Christmas gift her father gave to each child. Every year he would give each an orange. Fruit was a special treat.
