Samuel was the son of Capt. John Ashcraft (IV) and Mary Burch. He served in the Gloucester County Militia during the Revolutionary War, 1784, and was living in Gloucester Town (City), now Camden Co., in 1780 and 1791.

He married Keziah Moffett in 1788 in Gloucester Co., NJ. They moved to Mullica Hill, Gloucester Co., in 1800.
