Herald Coaster, January 5, 1978:

An unnamed suspect was being questioned today in the double murder of Steve and Marjorie Anderson, a Sugar Land couple found shot to death in their home Tuesday night.

Police had been searching for Anderson's daughter, Mary Lou Anderson Fontenot, of Lafayette, La. A member of the family said today the young woman had called them Wednesday night after having heard over the radio that she was being sought.

According to Sugar Land Police Chief J.E. Fendley, and Justice of the Peace Marvin Geick, autopsy results showed the couple had been shot a total of eight times. They were found bound and gagged with tape on the floor in the kitchen of their home of 111 Main St. about 7 p.m.

Dr. Joseph Jachimczyk, Harris County medical examiner, did the preliminary pathological investigation at the scene and autopsied the bodies later that night in Houston. Both had been shot at intermediate range with a 25-caliber automatic. Mrs. Anderson, 54, was shot five times and her husband, 55, three times in the head, Geick said.

The bodies were found by Mrs. Anderson's daughter, Joan Maresh. According to Geick, the television set was on and nothing seemed to have been disturbed. Money, checks, and jewelry were still in evidence. The front door of the home was locked, but the back door was not. A candle on the table had recently puddled out, he said. Officers said there was no sign of a struggle.

Funeral services for the Andersons will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Sugar Land. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight in the Davis & Dawson Funeral Home Chapel in Rosenberg.

Steve Anderson is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Anderson Fontenot of Lafayette, La.; two sisters, Mrs. Floyd Huffman of Sugar Land, Mrs. Mary Lee Grawnoski of Richmond; and two brothers, Joe and Stanley Anderson, both of Richmond; one grandson.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by a daughter, Joan Maresh of Sugar Land; a son, Denny Maresh of Sugar Land; stepdaughter, Barbara Rogers of Sugar Land; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Mahiczek of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Gorka and Mrs. Mabel Macik, both of Richmond; and two grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home chapel in Rosenberg after 4 p.m. today.

Fort Bend Mirror, January 11, 1978:

Sugar Land police have not yet eliminated or focused on any suspects in last week's murders of Steve and Marjorie Anderson, according to Capt. Earnest Taylor of the Sugar Land Police Department. The couple was found shot to death Jan. 3, with their hands and mouths taped.

Taylor said the department is presently sorting information from many sources. "It takes time to process it," he said. "We've eliminated a lot of false information. We are not stagnant."

Earlier this week, divers searched Oyster Creek for the murder weapon, a .25 caliber automatic pistol, but found nothing. Lie detector tests have also been given to some who were questioned in the case. Taylor said that Anderson's daughter, Mary Lou Anderson Fontenot, was located and interviewed, but has not submitted herself to a polygraph. Police still have no motive for the murders, Taylor said.

The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were found in their home at 111 Main St. by Mrs. Anderson's daughter, Joan Maresh, who had come over to borrow an item. Miss Maresh, a Dulles High School art teacher, had talked to her mother a short time earlier.

Besides her daughter, Joan, Mrs. Anderson is survived by her son, Denny Maresh of Sugar Land; stepdaughter, Barbara Rogers of Sugar Land; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Mahiczek of Richmond; and sisters, Elizabeth Gorka and Mabel Macik, both of Richmond.

Mr. Anderson is also survived by sisters, Mrs. Floyd Huffman of Sugar Land and Mary Lee Grawnoski of Richmond; and brothers, Joe and Stanley Anderson of Richmond.
