Paul James Smith age 84 of New Tazewell TN, passed away June 17, 2013 at Claiborne County Hospital. Paul retired from the U.S. Army and was a Mason. After his service to our country he went to work for Roadway Trucking, in Laurel, MD. Having a opportunity to purchase the Laurel Diner & hotel, he did so. In the mid seventies he would sell the diner and hotel and move the family to New Tazwell, TN.
He was born June 1, 1929 in Crystal Springs, MS. He was preceded in death by his first wife Clara Francis (Smith) Smith, mother to Paul Jr and Bruce, his loving second wife Dextra (McPherson) Smith, mother to Ron and Stacey, his parents Houston and Alpha B. Smith; sisters Sue Tackett and Patsy Ray. Paul is survived by daughter Stacey (Tony) Jennings of Tazewell, TN; sons Paul Smith Jr. of Kenton, OH; Bruce Smith of Tazewell, TN; Ron (Christina) Smith of Woodstock, GA and brother in-law Thomas Tackett of Princeton, KY. Paul is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, special care giver Lori Lawson, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Wednesday June 19, 2013 at the Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home with Masonic and funeral services to follow at 7pm with Rev. Eddie Overholt, music by Glenna Hodges. Graveside services will be at the Fairview Cemetery at 10am Thursday June 20, 2013 with military honors.
