Melvin Austin, many years a resident of Spencer and vicinity, died Monday morning, Feb. 25. His death came as the result of heart trouble and other complications. He became stricken a week ago Saturday but his condition did not become serious until Friday evening.

Mr. Austin, a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. I. Austin was born October 2, 1856 in McHenry County, Illinois, near the town of Woodstock. He lived there until he reached the age of eighteen when he hardware business with his uncle. W.R. Austin, of Woodstock. On April 15. 1883. Mr. Austin moved to Clay County. Iowa, and purchased a farm three miles north of Spencer. In 1888 he was united in marriage to Addie E. Rowley. To this union was born one child, Aubert, who now reside at Algona, Iowa. Mrs. Austin preceded him in death on December 20, 1907.

In January 1912 he again became engaged in the hardware business, purchasing a store at Langdon. la., but still retaining possession of his farm. On March 4, 1912. he was married to Mrs. Eliza Banks. He remained in business in Langdon until 1913 when he sold his store there and moved to Spencer. Here he accepted a position as city weigh-master which he held until the present city administration assumed office. Many have lost a staunch and true friend in the passing of Mel Austin. On the farm and as weigh-master he came in contact with a host of people and there are few whom he met who cannot look back upon him as a friend. He took a keen interest in community politics and could always be depended upon to support the cause that was right and just.

Mr. Austin leaves to mourn, his wife, his son. Aubert. a sister. Mrs. A. F. England of Spencer; two brothers, F. W. Austin of Canute, Kansas, and George A. Austin of Wagner, Oklahoma: two grandsons. Avery and Roger and two nephews. Clayton Riley of Spencer and Claude Riley of Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church. Rev. Clegg will preach the funeral sermon and the prayer will be given by Rev. Trlckey. Masonic services will be held at the grave. Interment will be made in Riverside cemetery. Pall bearers will he Gus Kohn. Herman Hoberg, Earl Bassett, F.J. O'Brien, James Levy and James W. Fisher.
