William Eli Garst was the sixth child of Christian "Christopher" Garst was born May 18, 1805 and died on Feb 17, 1879 in Sand Hills, Carrol County, Georgia, and Sarah Coltharp was born 23 Aug 23, 1807 and died on 6 April 6, 1877.

Christopher Garst and Sarah Coltharp had twelve known children: [1] Martha C Garst was born Sept 12, 1826 in Monroe County, Tennessee, and died Dec 21, 1902 in Carroll County, Georgia. She married Isacc Kinney on Dec 30, 1858 in Carroll County, Georgia. He was born 15 Sept 15, 1818 in North Carolina, and died June 1, 1899 in Carroll County, Georgia. [2] Lavinia Frances "Vaney" Garst Carroll was born March 15, 1831 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died May 17, 1875 in Lockesburg, Sevier County, Arkansas. She married A.M. Archimedy Michael Carroll, son of Moses Carroll and Elizabeth Workman. He was born July 15, 1828 in Orange County, North Carolina, and died May 13, 1901 in Sevier County, Arkansas. Both was buried in Old Union Cemetery, Lockesburg, Sevier County, Arkansas. [3] James Marion Garst was born Aug 17, 1833 in Carroll County, Georgia,, and died March 5, 1916 in Died at Confederate Soldiers Home at Atlanta. He was in the Civil War as a private March 4, 1862. Discharged, disability, May or June 1862. Enlisted as a private in Co. I 10th Regiment Ga. State Guards Cavalry July 28, 1862. Roll for January 28, 1864 , last on file shows him "Absent with leave, dismounted." No record of transfer. Pension records show he enlisted as a private in Co. A Beall's Battn. Georgia State Troops September 1864, and was discharged at Newnan, Georgia in 1865. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. He married Sarah Unknown. He married Fannie E Lyon Houseworth on Oct 20, 1871 in Fulton County, Georgia. She was born 1845 in Georgia, and died 1888 in Nebraska. [4] Joanna Garst was born 1836. Was in the Civil War, in the Company F, Georgia 7th Infantry Regiment, was captured Dec. 3, 1863 near Knoxville, Tenn. Released on Oath of Allegiance June 22, 1865 at Rock Island Barracks, Ill. Record show he was Confederate Burials in Carroll County, Georgia. He married Martha Groce on Dec 1, 1868 in Carroll County, Georgia, daughter of Lewis Dudley Groce and Melinda J Boyd. She was born Oct 4, 1847 in Meriwether County, Georgia. [7] Jacob F Garst was born 1843, and died May 11, 1863 at Hospital #1,in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia. Wounded mortally in the mouth at Chancellorsville. He was in the Civil War, in the Georgia Cobb's Legion Co. F. [10] Ester Annabelle Garst was born Dec. 21, 1848 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died Jan. 26, 1886 in Bosque County, Texas. She was buried in Kopperl Cemetery, Kopperl, Bosque County, Texas. [11] Philip Hinkle Garst was born Oct. 12, 1851 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died May 19, 1937 in Carroll County, Georgia. He married Mary S Hager on May 9, 1876 in Carroll County, Georgia, daughter of Jonathan Hager and Sarah White. She was born March 1840 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died 1914 in Carroll County, Georgia. He married Emma Brooks on April 8, 1926 in Carroll County, Georgia. She was born Sept 25, 1872, and died Dec. 16, 1966 in Carroll County, Georgia. All three was buried in Midway Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Villa Rica, Carroll County, Georgia. [12] Nancy Virginia Garst was born Dec. 12, 1853 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died May 9, 1909 in Richland Springs, San Saba County, Texas. She married her sister son, James Burroughs Carroll on Oct 12, 1885 in Sevier County, Arkansas, son of A.M. Archimedy Michael Carroll and Lavinia Frances "Vaney" Garst. He was born Oct. 12, 1858 in Lockesburg, Sevier County, Arkansas, and died Sept 6, 1940 in Austin, Travis County, Texas. John was captured Dec. 3, 1863 near Knoxville, Tenn. Released on Oath of Allegiance June 22, 1865 at Rock Island Barracks, Ill. Brother Jacob F. Garst was in the Georgia Cobb's Legion Co. F, muster in Aug 15, 1861. Jacob died May 7, 1863, at Hospital #1. Wounded mortally in the mouth at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. Effects left: 15 cents and sundries. His oldest brother James Marion Garst was first elisted in the 41st Regiment, Georgia Infantry, in March 4, 1862. In May or June 1862, he was a private Discharged, disability. On July 28, 1862, he enlisted into Co. I, 10th Regiment Georgia State Guards Cavalry.
