to the Memory of
MR.
NICHOLAS CAMBELL
who was born
on the Island of Malta
Dec. 24, 1732,
AND
came to this Country
previous to the
American Revolution
and died in this
TOWN
July 21, 1829,
in the 97th year of
his age.
He was one of
the ever memorable
Boston Tea Party,
who performed one
of the first acts of
Resistance to
British Oppression;
by the destruction
of a Cargo of Tea in
the Harbour of
Boston;
and commenced that
glorious struggle,
which terminated in
our National
INDEPENDENCE.
HE
Faithfully
Discharged all the
Duties of a good
Citizen,
And has ever been
Highly respected
For his Industry,
Benevolence
And Integrity of
CHARACTER.
He left no relatives
in this Country, to
follow his remains
to the silent receptacle
of the dead;
but the orphan's tear
will moisten the
green turf around
his Tomb,
And he will long be
remembered as
God's Noblest work,
an
Honest Man.
***********************
In his will he left a generous amount of money for the education of poor children in the town of Warren. There were 2 "Cambell Schools" in the town.
A note-On the gravestone his name is Cambell. However, in lists of Tea Party participants, it is Campbell.
