Born in Indiana, James Hefner was a teamster, blacksmith, and a California 49er. He settled in Elizabeth Lake, California, located in northern Los Angeles County between Castaic and Lancaster, in 1866, and married Margarita (Foster Ruiz) Hefner in 1867. They operated the stagecoach stop that had been established by Margarita's mother, Dona Maria (Nieves) Foster Ruiz, which later became known as Hefner's Station. He was an orchardist who served as a trustee of the Elizabeth Lake School District during the 1870s and the Postmaster of the Elizabeth Lake post office in 1893.
