Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Alamance Lutheran Church by Rev. James Lockley, Pastor of Alamance Lutheran Church and Dr. Donald Murray, Visitation Pastor of Alamance Lutheran Church. Mr. Newton will remain at Lowe Funeral Home until being taken to the church to lie in State 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
He was born in Georgetown County, S.C. to the late Mr. Walter Alexious Newton, Sr. and the late Mrs. Ethel Mae Hyatt. He was a textile long time employee of Standard Hosiery Mills in Alamance which later became Kaysor-Roth Corp., a member of Alamance Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council and was Superintendent of the Youth Sunday School department and also a member of the Bula Lodge 409 AF&AM.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Exie Ann Clayton who died in 1981; brothers, Walter Taft Newton, Charles Clyde Newton and Walter Alexious Newton, Jr. and a late stepson, George McCray, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Minnie Lee McCray Newton of Burlington; daughter, Mrs. Harvey "Margaret" Larson of Burlington, sisters, Mrs. Melvin "Mary Lou" King of Burlington, Mrs. Myrtle Sykes of Alamance; stepdaughters, Mrs. Trina Labberton of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Camelia Gower of Alpine, Calif; six step-grandchildren; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. today at the Lowe Funeral Home and other times the family will be at the daughter's home, Mrs. Margaret Larson, 315 Oakland Dr., Burlington, NC.
