Alfred (Al) Joseph Mitchell Jr. died May 23 in Downieville. He was 74.

His life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary Chapel in Nevada City. Burial will follow in Downieville.

He was born Dec. 3, 1935, in Gloucester, Mass.

Mr. Mitchell proudly served as a United States Marine. He was an individualist, ever a student, never ceasing to learn.

He loved the Lord Jesus.

He had been a commercial fisherman, an insurance agent, small business owner, gold miner, CalTrans equipment operator and trainer.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Mitchell; daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Mark Lemon of Coarsegold; son and daughter-in-law, Christian and Angela Mitchell of Chico; sister, Marsha Newman of El Cajon; loving grandchildren, Ashlynn and Kailey Lemon, and Chase and Weston Mitchell; and a large extended family.

All who knew him greatly miss his love.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mr. Mitchell's favorite charity, the Salvation Army.

Alfred Joseph Mitchell, Jr., 74, went home to the Lord he loved on May 23, 2010. Al was a graduate of Grossmont High School in 1954 and relocated his family to Downieville, CA, in 1976. He was an individualist and always a student, never ceasing to learn. A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Bales Mitchell; his daughter, Heidi Lemon; his son, Christian; grandchildren, Ashlynn, Kailey, Chase, and Weston; sister, Marsha Mitchell Newman; brother-in-law, Brian Bales; and predeceased in October by his brother, Edward James Mitchell. His life will be celebrated with full military honors at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary Chapel in Nevada City, CA, on Tuesday, June 1st, at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow in Downieville.
