John was the fourth of five children born to John Wesley Alter (1824-1863) and Clarissa Ann Sheets (1824-1871), who married circa 1846, probably in Pennsylvania where their first child was born. John's siblings were Rosalia Z. (b.1847 PA), Sarah E. (b.1849 OH), Mary Katherine (b. 1851 OH), and Charles H. (b.1857 OH).
John appeared with his family on only one census in 1860, living in Cambridge, Guernsey, Ohio, where John's father John Sr. was earning a living as a saddler.
Sadly, while serving in the Civil War, John's father died of disease at age 29. The next year, John Jr. died at age 8 years, 8 months, 3 days.
