Clara was born in Brockway, Jefferson, Pennsylvania. Circa 1846, she married John Wesley Alter, the son of Rev. John Alter and Charity VanAusdall. On 12 Oct 1847, the couple welcomed daughter Rosalia Z. Shortly after her birth, the family relocated to Ohio, where daughter Sarah E. was born in 1849.

The four of them appeared together on the 1850 Census (enumerated under the spelling "Alters"), living in Cambridge, Guernsey, Ohio, where John was earning a living as a saddler. Fellow saddler, 17-year-old James Lyons was also living with the family.

They were still in Cambridge when the 1860 enumeration came around (again enumerated under "Alters". John was still making saddles. It appears that the couple lost daughter Sarah as she did not appear with her parents on that census. Three more children had joined the family--Mary Katherine in 1851, John T. in 1855, and Charles H. in 1857.

Sometime after that census year, the family moved to Warsaw, Kosciusko Indiana. During the Civil War, Clara's husband John enlisted on 11 Jul 1862. He served in the Union Army as a private in Co. F, Indiana 12th Infantry Regiment. He died of disease on 28 Jan 1863 in Grand Junction, Tennessee. Clara filed for a widow's pension in 1864. Tragedy struck again when Clara and John's eight-year-old son John T. died in 1864.

I looked for Clara and the three children on the 1870 Census but could not find them. Clara die on 8 Feb 1871 at age 46.
