John Rowan Hamilton in 1851 was elected to the first board of trustees for the Louisville public schools and in 1854 was an incorporator of the Louisville Water Company. He was in partnership with his brothers in the pork-packing business in Louisville. At the time of his death, he was a member of the firm of Hardin, Hamilton & Lewman, a wholesale seed company. He married in 1854, Celia Anne Hobbs (1833-97), daughter of William A. (1800-50) and Nancy Wray May Hobbs (1803-79), of Bullitt County, Ky. Their six children were Nancy Sue (1855-1933), Elizabeth (1858-93), Henry Smith (1861-74), James Hobbs (1862-93), Charles Lee (1865-1934), and Katherine Hamilton (1870-94).
