Mark was a Civil War veteran, serving with Company F, 14th US Heavy Artillery (a colored regiment). He came to California about 1887 to escape the poverty of his home state. By working for cement contractors for a long time, he became master of the business and took contracts on his own account and became himself an employer of men. He was laying a sidewalk on H Street when found lying helpless, unable to move. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis, and that evening he died at his home on 25th and W streets. He was 64 years of age. It was said of Mark that he was an intelligent, honorable, upright, and religious man who had the good will of everyone who knew him. The funeral was held from the American Methodist Episcopal Church. He was survived by his wife Nannie, his son William Langley, and stepdaughter Mrs. John Noble.
