The son of John A. & Mary (Helm) Armstrong, in 1860 he was a miner living with and/or working for miner Thomas Parford in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. By 1864, he stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Lykens, Dauphin County, June 15, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 19 as a private with Co. D, 26th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg January 25, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.

He married Amanda Susan Sanssaman or Singer (both reported) and fathered Lilly (b. @1868), George (b. @1871), Jennie (b. @1872), Abbie (b. @1874), John Workman (b. 04/25/76), Anna (b. @1878), and Laura Edna (b. @1881 - married Christian Lafayette Duffield). Although the 1880 census lists him as a resident of Wiconisco, Dauphin County, his obituary claims he died in Berlin, Somerset County, reportedly from an abscess on the lungs.
