S. N. PARKER DEAD

Simeon N. Parker, contractor and builder of the Parker apartments, 422 West Eighth, as well as of various other businesses and residences here, died Wednesday night at 11:30 o'clock in the Newman Memorial County hospital.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Parker, Simeon Parker was born November 22, 1862, on a farm near here. As a boy he went to Texas to help drive native cattle from that state to Dodge City, over the Chisholm trail, and a year later he got a job on construction work for the Northern Pacific railway, spending three years in the northwest. He returned to Kansas in 1880 and worked as a carpenter's helper until 1882 when he returned to Lyon county and farmed on his mother's homestead for five years.

He came to Emporia to live in 1887, and has been a contractor and builder most of the time since. He built and lived in three homes before building the apartment house in 1913-14 and moving into it. Among the buildings he erected are the Reeble's grocery store at Second and Commercial, the Warren Mortgage Co. building, post office, old Harvey House, the railway express office, and the Poole dry goods store. He also was the superintendent of construction for the W. A. White residence, the Dunlap home, Newman Memorial County hospital, the nurse's home, Welfare building, Broadview hotel, and the Citizen's Bank building.

Mr. Parker was married in 1889 to Miss Mary M. Wall of Emporia, and she died in 1910. He was married a second time in 1912, to Miss Mary A. Thomas, of Emporia, and she survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. W. C. Ogle, San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. J. W. Horton, of El Paso, Tex.; two granddaughters, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren.

He was city commissioner of public utilities in 1916-17-18, and the Ruggles dam and the waterworks filter plant were constructed during this period. He was a member of all the Masonic bodies of Emporia, of the Scottish Rite in Topeka, and the Shrine in Leavenworth. He also was a member of the First Congregational church, was treasurer of the board of control of the Masonic temple, and had been a member of the Newman Memorial Hospital board of trustees for several years.
