HAGERSTOWN,MARYLAND -- Frederick Klein, 77, of 18922 Dover Drive, Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born March 20, 1921, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Russell Howard Klein and the late Anna (Ruehl) Klein. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Klein.

Mr. Klein was a graduate of Allegany High School, Cumberland, in 1939, and Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va., in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a scientist for the Department of the Army at Fort Detrick for 30 years, and later at the Frederick Cancer Research Center, where he was prominent in the mammalian cell production area in the development and production of interferon and other related biological modifier drugs. After retiring in 1984, he consulted for large-scale mammalian cell production drugs and monoclonal antibody production, and advised in the design of biotech facilities and equipment.

He was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Hagerstown. He was a member of Waynesboro Country Club and the Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Doris (Robinson) Klein, Hagerstown; a son, Frederick Klein Jr., Clarksburg; a granddaughter, Teri King, Gaithersburg; a grandson, Patrick Klein, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown, on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, Monday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Schlicher officiating.

Interment will be in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
