Carmela was born in Celico, Italy. She married her husband there. She felt much pain in her life. Her first to children, a boy and a girl named Maria died in the 1918 outbreak of the Spanish Flu that killed about 5% of the world's population. Her third child, Victorio, was born during the outbreak that took her two oldest children. Her youngest, Antonio, was born 4 years later.

Her husband was in America working as a miner when he was killed; leaving her alone with her two surviving children. Antonio was only about 3 at the time of his father's death, and Victorio was only about 7. She wore black for the remainder of her life. She came to America February 18, 1968 for the very first time. She died 6 months later.
