John was born about 1772/75, the son of Gibson Ashcraft and Deborah Smith. He was a blacksmith by trade, and married Sophia Bee Beckett (Bockitt) on 12 Jan. 1796 in Gloucester Co., NJ. He resided in Blackwoodtown, old Gloucester (now Camden) Co., NJ, but also reportedly lived in Philadelphia at one time. His estate was inventoried in January 1819; Jesse Richards was granted administration of his estate.
