Richard and his siblings grew up on a farm in Union Township, Tyler County, West Virginia.
He married Estella "Stella" DeLong, daughter of Levi and Emiline Delong, on June 23, 1903 in Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia.
Together Richard and Stella had 3 children: Rena Olive, Joseph Levi and Hazel.
Stella died on May 9, 1900 in Bens Run, Pleasants County, West Virginia. After her death Richard remarried.
He married Ida May McCall, daughter of James and Ellen (Beegle) McCall, on June 23, 1903 in Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia.
Immediately after their marriage, Richard and Ida moved to Grandview Township, Washington County, Ohio.
Together Richard and Ida had 4 children: Nellie Vaughn, Martha Pearl, William Jennings and Harry.
He worked on the Ohio River as a Steamboat Engineer, his entire adult life.
He died on December 17, 1936 at 9:20 am in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. His official cause of death was "Otitis Media, Acute Lateral Sinus and Thrombosis Meningitis" with contributor causes of "Chronic Nephritis and Atherosclerotic".
At the time of his death he was survived by three daughters, a son and numerous grandchildren. He was also survived by a sister and two brothers. He was proceeded in death by his first and second wives, one daughter, two sons, two brothers and one daughter.
He is buried with his second wife at Parr Hill Cemetery in Beavertown, Washington County, Ohio.
